When are Tooth Extractions Necessary?

Dr. Hill is passionate about saving teeth as often as possible; however, with that said, there are times when a tooth can no longer be repaired. Dr. Hill does not recommend tooth extractions unless they are necessary and all other possible treatment options prove unsuccessful. The following are situations where a tooth may need to be extracted:

  • The tooth is significantly broken, so there is not enough remaining structure to repair it
  • A tooth has a cavity below the level of the bone and cannot be restored
  • A tooth becomes broken or fractured beyond repair
  • A baby tooth prohibits a permanent tooth from erupting appropriately
  • A tooth may be removed to make more space in one’s mouth for a denture or orthodontic treatment
  • A tooth that has lost all of its bone support due to a gum infection
  • A third molar (wisdom tooth) is causing damage to adjacent teeth or is stuck below the gum/bone tissue

Tooth Extraction Post-Operative Instructions

Dr. Hill will give you specific instructions following your tooth removal. To ensure a speedy recovery, we suggest the following precautions:

  • Avoid heavy lifting or physical activity for 24 hours after your procedure
  • Do not smoke, no aggressive rinsing, and do not drink out of a straw for at least one week
  • Ice packs or cold compresses can help reduce swelling
  • Over-the-counter pain relievers help manage post-op symptoms
  • Gentle, warm saltwater rinses and gentle brushing are OK
  • Softer foods for one week and “babying” the extraction site are recommended

How Much Does a Tooth Extraction Cost?

There are quite a few factors that affect the cost of an extraction. For example, how many roots the tooth has and where it is located in your mouth will play a role in the overall price of your procedure. Also, surgical extractions cost more than simple ones. Every tooth is different, so Dr. Hill will discuss the costs with you.
